Phuket season and booking index: October 2026 edition
In short: Phuket's high season starts in November and peaks from December 20 to January 10, then again around Chinese New Year (February 6, 2027). In 2025, hotels were 92% full in January-February, against 59% in April. October is still the wettest month along with September (19 rainy days, 336 mm), and December is dry again (8 days, 82 mm). For a motorbike over the festive season, book 3 to 4 weeks ahead, and right now for a big bike.
This index comes out every month at the same address. It answers one simple question: for your dates, will Phuket be full, and how far ahead do you need to lock in your motorbike? We cross the official weather data, hotel and airport figures, and the school holidays of the countries that fill the island.

One line per month, from October 2026 to September 2027. Rain comes from the Thai Meteorological Department normals (1991-2020). Hotel occupancy is the latest reliable figure published for that month, with its year. The last column is our advice for booking a small scooter.
| Month | Rain (days / mm) | Hotels full | Demand | NMAX at ScootZone | Book your motorbike... |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| October 2026 | 19 d / 336 mm | n/a | Low, picks up in late October | 200-300 ฿ | 2-3 days ahead |
| November 2026 | 13 d / 178 mm | n/a | Rising (Diwali, Loy Krathong) | 200-300 ฿, then rising at month end | 1 week ahead |
| December 2026 | 8 d / 82 mm | n/a | Peak from the 20th | 500-600 ฿ | 3-4 weeks ahead |
| January 2027 | 4 d / 50 mm | 91.8% (2025) | Very high, peak until the 10th | 500-600 ฿ | 3-4 weeks ahead |
| February 2027 | 2 d / 24 mm | 92% over Jan-Feb (2025) | Very high (Chinese New Year) | 500-600 ฿ | 2-3 weeks ahead |
| March 2027 | 6 d / 81 mm | 75% (2025) | High | 500-600 ฿ | 1-2 weeks ahead |
| April 2027 | 10 d / 135 mm | 59% (2025) | Medium, peak at Songkran | depends on the dates | 2 weeks ahead for the 13th-15th |
| May to September 2027 | 16-19 d / 237-350 mm | 66.9% in June (2025) | Low | 200-300 ฿ | a few days ahead |
Rain: TMD normals 1991-2020, Phuket station. Occupancy: 2025 figures published by the Thai Hotels Association and the trade press; "n/a" when no reliable figure is published for that month. Prices: ScootZone rate card (low / high season), the exact price for your dates is confirmed in writing.
The thing to remember: the weather has two seasons, booking has three. The last three weeks of December and the first half of January are a world apart: everything fills up at once, hotels, transfers and motorbikes. Outside that window, even in high season, one week's notice is usually enough for a small scooter.
The dates that fill Phuket between now and April 2027
Phuket does not fill up in one go. Each peak matches the holidays of a specific country. Here are the ones to note, dates checked on October 8, 2026:
| Dates | Event | Who arrives | Effect on the ground |
|---|---|---|---|
| October 10-18, 2026 | Vegetarian Festival | Thais, curious visitors from everywhere | Processions in Phuket Town, streets closed at times |
| October 17 - November 2, 2026 | French autumn school holidays | French families | Start of the fill-up, prices still low |
| October 18-29, 2026 | New direct routes | London, Zurich, Kuwait, Minsk | More direct flights for the season |
| November 6-10, 2026 | Diwali (on the 8th) | Indian travellers | One of the busy weeks of early season |
| November 24, 2026 | Loy Krathong | Thais and tourists | Lantern evening, beaches full after dark |
| December 19, 2026 - January 5, 2027 | Christmas holidays (French school dates; Christmas and New Year holidays run across all of Europe and Australia) | French, European and Australian families | Peak of the year |
| December 31, 2026 - January 10, 2027 | Russian New Year holidays | Russia, top country of origin | The peak stretches to January 10 |
| February 6, 2027 | Chinese New Year | China, South-East Asia | Second peak of the season |
| February 6 - March 8, 2027 | French winter school holidays (zones C, A, B) | French families | Steady demand all through February |
| April 13-15, 2027 | Songkran | Thais and tourists | Water fights, motorbikes in high demand across the island |
Sources: Tourism Authority of Thailand (Vegetarian Festival), official French school holiday calendars and Russian public holidays, airline announcements. The dates of the Old Phuket Town Festival and Phuket Bike Week 2027 have not been announced yet.
The classic trap: arriving on January 2 thinking the holidays are over. The Russian holidays run until January 10, and Russia is the top country of origin of Phuket's visitors in 2026 (661,876 visitors from January to August). From December 20 to January 10, assume everything gets snapped up.

Book for the holidaysSmall scooter or big bike: two different lead times
Not every model goes at the same pace. Small automatic scooters are plentiful at every rental shop, but they are the cheapest, so they are the first to go in high season. Big bikes (TMAX, X-ADV, Ténéré) are scarce: each shop only has a few, and a single two-week booking is enough to block a model.
| Period | NMAX, ADV 160 | XMAX, ADV 350 | TMAX, X-ADV, Ténéré |
|---|---|---|---|
| October - mid-November | 2-3 days | 3-5 days | 1 week |
| Mid-November - mid-December | 1 week | 1-2 weeks | 2 weeks |
| December 20 - January 10 | 3-4 weeks | 4 weeks | right now |
| February (Chinese New Year) | 2-3 weeks | 3 weeks | 4 weeks |
| March - April (outside Songkran) | 1 week | 1-2 weeks | 2 weeks |
| May - September | a few days | a few days | 1 week |
Our advice as a rental shop in Patong, not a statistic. Other rental shops on the island also recommend booking at least two weeks ahead in high season.
Two more reasons to book early in high season. First, many rental shops refuse monthly rentals from November to April: they would rather rent by the day, which is dearer. Second, booking before you arrive locks in your price in writing: you avoid haggling on the spot at the height of demand. At ScootZone, the price confirmed on WhatsApp does not move.
What the 2026 visitor figures say
- Slightly fewer people than in 2025: 9.2 million visitors from January to August 2026, down 1.8%, including 6.8 million foreigners (down 2.5%). Over the whole of 2025, Phuket had received 14.1 million visitors.
- A stable airport: 17.47 million passengers at Phuket airport in 2025 (up 1.5%). From January to May 2026, arrivals are at the same level as in 2025 (3.92 million, down 0.1%). On February 14, 2026, the airport broke its record with 71,613 passengers in a single day.
- Shorter stays: 8 to 9 nights on average in November 2025, against 11 nights a year earlier.
- The nationalities of 2026 (January-August): Russia 661,876, China 459,218, India 393,277, Australia 167,345, United Kingdom 152,866, Germany 115,795, France 111,701.
- Hotels less full off-peak: 66.2% average occupancy from January to August 2026.
What it means for you: outside the festive weeks, Phuket is under a bit less pressure than in 2025. You have more choice and more room to book. The peaks themselves do not move: Christmas, New Year and Chinese New Year are full every year.
Rain and sea: what really changes on the road
The rainy season looks scary on paper. On a motorbike, it mostly changes how you organise your day:
- October: 19 rainy days on average, but mostly afternoon and evening showers, with about 6 hours of sunshine a day. Ride in the morning, keep a poncho under the seat.
- November: 13 rainy days, about 7 hours of sunshine. Roads dry quickly, traffic stays light.
- December to March: 2 to 8 rainy days a month and about 9 hours of sunshine. In return, more traffic between Patong, Karon and Kata at peak hours.
- The sea: from May to October, red flags are common on the west coast (Patong, Karon, Kata, Kamala) because of the currents. It calms down again in November-December. The Similan Islands national park reopens on October 15.

October-November 2026: the window to grab
If you can choose your dates, late October and the first half of November offer the best value of the year:
- low season rates still apply: NMAX at 200-300 ฿ per day at ScootZone, against 500-600 ฿ at the height of the season;
- the rain eases week after week, and dry days become the norm from late November;
- hotels are cheaper: in 2025, a room cost 5,557 ฿ on average in January-February, and according to local guides a room is a third to half more expensive in high season than in low season;
- the roads are quiet, ideal for a first time on a scooter.
For a long stay, see our page on long-term rental. And from 7 days of rental, delivery to your hotel is free.

Ask for my priceMethod: where these figures come from
- Survey date: October 8, 2026.
- Weather: 1991-2020 normals from the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) for the Phuket station, cross-checked with three climate websites.
- Visitor numbers: data from the tourism authority and Phuket province (visitors), Airports of Thailand (passengers), the Thai Hotels Association and specialist firms (occupancy, room rates), as reported by the Thai press.
- Dates: Tourism Authority of Thailand, official French school holiday calendars and Russian, Chinese and Indian public holidays.
- Motorbike prices: current ScootZone rate card; market trends from several Phuket guides published in 2025-2026.
- Limits: monthly occupancy figures for late 2025 are not yet reliably published, so we show "n/a" rather than make them up. The recommended booking lead times are our opinion as a rental shop, not a measurement.
Frequently asked questions
When does high season start in Phuket in 2026?
High season starts in November and runs until April, with a peak from December 20 to January 5 and around Chinese New Year on February 6, 2027. That is the breakdown given by every guide and tourist office we checked on October 8, 2026. The return of good weather is gradual: November still averages about 13 rainy days and 178 mm of rain, against 8 days and 82 mm in December (Thai Meteorological Department normals, 1991-2020). The real dry season runs from late December to March. October and early November are a shoulder season: quieter roads, prices still low, afternoon showers. It is the cheapest window to rent.
How far in advance should you book a motorbike in Phuket?
It depends on your dates and the model. Outside peak periods, two or three days are enough for a small scooter like the Yamaha NMAX. For a stay between December 19 and January 10, or around Chinese New Year (February 6, 2027), book three to four weeks ahead, and right now for a big bike like the TMAX or the X-ADV, of which each rental shop only has a few. In high season the cheapest models go first, and many rental shops refuse monthly rentals so they can rent by the day, which earns them more. Booking before you arrive also lets you lock in your price in writing.
How much does a motorbike cost in Phuket in high season?
At ScootZone, a Yamaha NMAX costs 200 to 300 ฿ per day in low season and 500 to 600 ฿ in high season, roughly double. The Honda ADV 160 goes from 300-400 ฿ to 700-800 ฿, the TMAX from 800-1,200 ฿ to 2,100-3,200 ฿, and the X-ADV 750 (2018-2020 generation) from 900-1,200 ฿ to 2,100-3,200 ฿. Across the market, guides report the same trend: 150 to 400 ฿ for a 125 cc in low season, noticeably more from November to April. Hotels follow the same pattern: in 2025, the average room rate was 5,557 ฿ in January-February, against 4,483 ฿ in March.
Does it rain too much in Phuket in October and November to ride a motorbike?
No, but you need to plan around it. October is on average the wettest month along with September: about 19 rainy days and 336 mm. Most of that rain falls as afternoon or evening showers, with mornings often dry. November improves clearly (13 days, 178 mm) and December is dry again. In practice: ride in the morning, keep a poncho under the seat, slow down on hill roads like the one from Patong to Kata, which are slippery right after a shower, and wait twenty minutes under cover when a storm is heavy. Quiet roads and low prices more than make up for it.
Can you swim in Phuket in October?
With care. From May to October, the south-west monsoon creates strong rip currents on the west coast, the one with Patong, Karon, Kata and Kamala. Red flags are common there: one red flag means swimming is forbidden, two red flags mean extreme danger. Local guides count several dozen drownings a year, almost all during the monsoon. Lifeguards only watch Patong, Karon, Kata, Bang Tao and Surin, from about 8 am to 6 pm. The sea calms down from November and especially from December. A motorbike helps: you can reach a more sheltered beach like Nai Harn in 20 to 30 minutes, or wait for a calm day.
What are the peak dates in Phuket between November 2026 and April 2027?
The dates to watch: Diwali from November 6 to 10, 2026, which brings many Indian travellers; Loy Krathong on November 24; the French Christmas school holidays from December 19 to January 5, when Christmas and New Year holidays bring families from all over Europe and Australia; the Russian New Year holidays from December 31 to January 10, Russia being the top country of origin of Phuket's visitors in 2026; Chinese New Year on February 6, 2027; the French winter school holidays from February 6 to March 8 depending on the zone; and Songkran from April 13 to 15, 2027. On these dates, book your motorbike, your hotel and your transfer as early as possible.
Is Phuket less busy in 2026 than in 2025?
Slightly. From January to August 2026, Phuket received 9.2 million visitors, down 1.8% year on year, including 6.8 million foreigners (down 2.5%). Hotel occupancy over the same period was 66.2%. Travellers also stay for less time: 8 to 9 nights on average in November 2025, against 11 nights a year earlier. The nationalities most present in 2026 are Russia, China, India, Australia, the United Kingdom, Germany and France. None of this changes the Christmas and New Year peaks, which stay saturated. Outside those weeks, though, you find space more easily.
When is this index updated?
Every month, at the same address. We record the weather for the month ahead (official normals), the airport and hotel figures published by the authorities and specialist firms, the holiday and festival dates of the main countries visitors come from, and how rental rates are moving. This first edition dates from October 8, 2026, just before high season. The next one, in early November 2026, will look at the first weeks of high season and at the new direct air routes opened in October (London, Zurich, Kuwait, Minsk). If a date or a figure has changed, write to us on WhatsApp.
