Phuket by scooter: 6 spots & routes from Patong
A scooter is the best way to discover Phuket: you stop wherever you like, get off the beaten track and save a huge amount of time compared with taxis. From Patong, most of the island's iconic spots are under 30 minutes away. Here are 6 must-see places to chain together, each with an approximate distance, the road difficulty and a tip to make the most of it.
Our advice: start with the south of the island (beaches, viewpoints, temples) over one full day, then keep Old Town and the north for a second, more relaxed outing. We give you a logical loop at the end of the article.

Book on WhatsApp1. Kata & Kata Noi: the first beaches south
Just ~15-20 min from Patong along the coast road, Kata and its little sister Kata Noi are two calmer, gentler bays than busy Patong. Pale sand, turquoise water, snorkelling spots and cafés at the water's edge: the perfect warm-up for the day.
Road: easy, well paved, a few scenic bends. Tip: park on the Kata Noi side, often less crowded, and grab a coffee on a terrace before heading up to the viewpoint just above.
2. Karon Viewpoint: three beaches in one glance
About 10 min above Kata, the Karon Viewpoint (sometimes called Kata Viewpoint) offers one of the island's finest panoramas: the three bays of Kata Noi, Kata and Karon lined up, turquoise sea as far as the eye can see. It's one of Phuket's most famous shots.
Road: short but steep climb with a few hairpins, so keep it in low gear and be careful if you're a beginner. Tip: come mid-morning to avoid backlight, and park properly in the designated area, as the road is busy.
3. Promthep Cape: sunset at the tip of the island
About 30 min further south, Promthep Cape marks Phuket's southernmost point. It is the sunset spot: crowds gather in the evening to watch the sun plunge into the Andaman Sea, with the lighthouse and small islands as a backdrop.
Road: easy to the cape, with a gentle climb at the end. Tip: arrive at least 30-45 min before sunset for a spot and a good angle. On the way you pass near Nai Harn, a gorgeous beach for a swim before the sunset.
4. Wat Chalong: Phuket's most revered temple
Heading back toward the centre of the island (~30 min from Patong), Wat Chalong is Phuket's most important and most visited Buddhist temple. Golden roofs, murals and a tall chedi you can climb for a view over the surroundings: a lovely cultural break between two beaches.
Road: easy, main roads. Tip: modest dress required (shoulders and knees covered). Remove your shoes before entering the buildings and keep your voice down, as it's an active place of worship.

About 10-15 min from Wat Chalong, the Big Buddha towers over Phuket from the top of Nakkerd Hill, visible from far away. The 45 m white marble statue and the 360° view over the south coast are well worth the climb.
Road: a long, winding climb of several kilometres, the most demanding stretch of the day. Leave yourself room, brake gradually and skip it if the scooter is heavily loaded. Tip: come early morning for cooler air and perfect light, before the tour buses.
6. Phuket Old Town: the Sino-Portuguese old quarter
About 40 min from Patong, Old Town is a total change of mood: colourful Sino-Portuguese façades, lanes full of street art, vintage cafés, Chinese temples and a Sunday night market (Walking Street). This is the Phuket you don't see from the beach, perfect for a late afternoon or a dedicated outing.
Road: longer and urban, with dense downtown traffic, so stay alert and park as soon as you find a spot. Tip: park the scooter and explore on foot; it's a quarter best enjoyed slowly.
Want more up north? Kamala and Surin
North of Patong (~20-30 min via the winding, scenic Patong Hill road), Kamala and Surin offer smarter, calmer and leafier beaches, ideal for a relaxed half-day away from the crowds. A great pick for your second outing.
Our suggested loop from Patong
For a big day in the south, here's a logical order that limits back-and-forth: Patong → Kata & Kata Noi → Karon Viewpoint → Nai Harn → Promthep Cape → Wat Chalong → Big Buddha → back to Patong. By timing the sunset at Promthep, you chain beaches in the morning, viewpoints midday and temples in the late afternoon.
Keep Old Town and the north (Kamala, Surin) for another day: they're two different moods that deserve time. Fill up in the morning, carry water, ride covered (licence + insurance) and avoid the heavy afternoon showers in the rainy season.
Frequently asked questions
Can you tour Phuket by scooter in one day?
Yes. By chaining the southern spots (Kata, Karon, viewpoint, Promthep, Wat Chalong, Big Buddha) you cover the essentials in one full day. For Old Town and the north (Kamala, Surin), plan a second trip so you can enjoy them without rushing.
Are Phuket's roads hard to ride by scooter?
The south coast (Patong-Kata-Karon) is well paved and easy. The climbs to the Big Buddha and Karon Viewpoint are steep: keep it in low gear and avoid riding two-up if you're a beginner. The Patong Hill road toward Kamala is winding, so take it slow.
When is the best time to ride in Phuket?
Early morning for the light, cooler air and to beat the crowds at viewpoints. Late afternoon for the Promthep sunset. In the rainy season, ride in the morning and head back before the heavy afternoon showers.
Do you need a licence to rent a scooter in Phuket?
Yes. A valid motorcycle licence (ideally an International Driving Permit with an A/A1 category) is what lets you ride legally and stay covered. Not sure about yours?
