Riding a scooter in Phuket: 8 safety tips
The scooter is the best way to explore Phuket — free and cheap. But Thai roads have their codes. Here are 8 concrete tips to ride worry-free.
1. Always wear a helmet
The helmet is mandatory (for you and your passenger) and the number-one cause of fines. Above all, it saves your life. Non-negotiable.
2. Ride on the left
In Thailand, traffic is on the left. Stay very focused the first hours, especially at roundabouts and car-park exits.
3. Start on a small scooter
If you're not used to it, start with an NMAX, not a big maxi-scooter. Move up once you're comfortable.
4. Watch out for rain
In the rainy season (May-October), showers make the road very slippery, especially the first minutes. Slow down and avoid road markings.
5. The Patong / Kata hills
The road between Patong and Kata climbs and drops steeply. Brake before the bend, never in it, and keep your distance.
6. Stay covered (licence + insurance)
Ride with the right licence and insurance: if something happens, medical costs can be high. At ScootZone, insurance is included.
7. Police checks
Frequent around Patong. Carry your licence + international permit. A check when you're in order takes 30 seconds.
8. Night and partying
Patong nights can be lively. Never ride after a drink. Take a Grab/Bolt — your scooter will wait for tomorrow.
