What licence to ride a scooter in Thailand?
Planning your Phuket trip and thinking of renting a scooter? One question always comes up: what licence do you really need? Here's the clear answer.
The required licence
In Thailand, to ride a motorised two-wheeler you need:
- a motorcycle licence (category A / A1 depending on engine size), and
- an International Driving Permit (IDP) that translates your home licence.
The IDP does not replace your national licence — you must carry both while riding.
Is a car licence (B) enough?
No. A car licence doesn't cover motorcycles. Some rental shops don't check, but in case of a police stop or accident you're considered unlicensed for a two-wheeler.
Police checks
Road checks are frequent in Phuket, especially around Patong. Without a valid licence, the fine is usually 500 baht. Manageable — but the real risk is elsewhere.
The real point: insurance
With the right licence, you ride properly covered by your insurance — that's the real benefit, beyond avoiding a fine. And good news: it's simple to get (see below).
How to get it before you leave
The International Driving Permit is requested before departure, in your home country (free or a few euros, a few weeks' wait). Plan ahead: you can't get it on the spot.
Is the International Permit paid?
Usually free or symbolic, but request it in advance.
I only have a car licence, what do I do?
A car licence isn't enough for a two-wheeler. The simplest: get an International Driving Permit before you leave, it's quick.
