What licence to ride a scooter in Thailand?

Planning your Phuket trip and thinking of renting a scooter to explore Patong, Kata or Karon freely? One question always comes up: what licence do you really need to ride a scooter in Thailand? Here's a clear, honest and complete answer so you can set off with peace of mind and ride legally.

The short version: Thai law requires a valid motorcycle licence, together with an International Driving Permit for foreign visitors. We'll walk you through the details below, without drama, but without hiding anything.

The licence legally required in Thailand

To ride a motorised two-wheeler (scooter or motorcycle) in Thailand, the rules call for two documents:

The IDP does not replace your national licence: the two go together. While riding you must carry both your national motorcycle licence and your International Driving Permit. That combination is what makes you compliant.

The difference between a car licence and a motorcycle licence

This is the most common mix-up, so let's be clear: a car licence (category B) does not cover a scooter. A scooter is a motorised two-wheeler and falls under the motorcycle licence (category A/A1), not the car licence.

Some rental shops don't check this. But at a police stop or in an accident, a rider holding only a car licence is treated as not holding the required licence for a two-wheeler, which mostly matters on the insurance side. No drama if that's your case: if you only have a car licence, message us on WhatsApp and we'll tell you simply what's possible for you, starting with the easiest path, an IDP with the motorcycle category listed on it (see below).

The International Driving Permit (IDP) and category A

The International Driving Permit is a document that translates your national licence into several languages and is recognised by Thailand. A point often overlooked: it only reflects the categories you already hold.

In other words, to be covered on a scooter your IDP must show category A (motorcycle). If your national licence only includes category B (car), your IDP will only show B as well. So check that category A is present before you leave.

How to get it before you leave

The IDP is requested before departure, in your home country, since you can't get it on the spot in Thailand. The essentials:

Police checks in Phuket

Road checks are part of everyday life in Phuket, especially around Patong and on tourist routes. Nothing to worry about: during a stop, police simply look at two things, helmet use and a valid licence. With both in order, it takes thirty seconds and you're on your way.

Without a valid motorcycle licence, you may be asked for a small fine, usually around 500 baht. Manageable, and honestly not the point. The real matter is insurance.

The real point: being covered by insurance

Beyond avoiding a fine, the licence plays a much bigger role: it determines your cover in case of an accident. With the right motorcycle licence, you ride properly insured. Without a valid licence for a two-wheeler, your cover can be challenged at the worst possible moment. That's the real risk, and it weighs far more than 500 baht.

The good news is that getting in order is simple: an IDP with category A, requested in advance, and you ride worry-free.

Just message us on WhatsApp, we'll tell you simply what's possible for you. And on the conditions side, we've done our best to keep it smooth:

Do you need a licence to ride a scooter in Thailand?

Yes. The law requires a valid motorcycle licence (category A or A1 depending on engine size), together with an International Driving Permit for foreign visitors. The motorcycle licence is what is officially required.

Is a car licence enough for a scooter?

No, a car licence (category B) does not cover a motorised two-wheeler. A scooter requires a motorcycle licence. A car licence is fine for renting a car, not a scooter.

Is the International Driving Permit paid?

It is usually free or a symbolic fee, but request it in advance in your home country. Allow a few days to a few weeks.

What do police check during a stop in Phuket?

Mainly helmet use and a valid licence. With both in order, a stop takes thirty seconds. Without a valid motorcycle licence, you may be asked for a small fine, usually around 500 baht.

Does the licence matter for insurance?

Yes, this is the most important point. With the right licence you are properly covered in case of an accident. Without a valid motorcycle licence, your cover can be challenged, which is far heavier than a fine.
